Sangria with RAFT Hibiscus Lavender Syrup

This is a post about willful obstinance to the seasons. Fall may have come, but here in Santa Barbara it's still sunny. I am going to kick my feet up in the garden on Sunday evenings and call it a sangria sort of day if I want to.
And I want to. In part, because I love how easy sangria is to make. Since it's best made a day ahead, it's a perfect party cocktail (if you can call sangria a cocktail). But don't worry too much if you lack the foresight to get it put together in advance. I didn't let my first glass rest as long as recommended and it was still splendid.
A batch of sangria on a lazy weekend also seems like a great excuse to enjoy the last of our summer weather in my garden. When we first bought and moved into our house last year, the front yard held nothing but some grass and an unbelievably ugly cement pond. We fenced it in to prepare for adopting Barley, but quickly the drought and his shenanigans shredded the lawn. Since there was no direct access from the house to the yard (except a dog door), we didn't spend much time out there and it just became a big dust bowl for the dog. He would come in with sheets of dirt that'd he track through the house. I couldn't wash the sheets on our bed fast enough. Finally, we decided enough was enough. We built double doors from our living room out into the yard, constructed a new cement stoop, graveled the yard, and were fortuitously gifted some outdoor furniture. Folks, we now have a proper yard and are well prepared to indulge in some doors-wide-open-all-the-time sort of living. I'm just getting the plants and lights set up. I'm ecstatic.
1 bottle Sauvignon Blanc
1/2 cup silver rum (optional)
1 cup ruby red grapefruit juice
1/3 cup RAFT Hibiscus Lavender syrup (or more to taste)
1 cup water
1/2 orange, chopped (you could easily double)
1/2 pear, chopped (you could easily double)
1 cup raspberries

The Hibiscus Lavender syrup is subtle here and you could certainly experiment with more. Next time, I think I'll make a sangria style spritzer. I'll omit the grapefruit juice, double the amount of RAFT Hibiscus Lavender syrup and top it off with a substantial amount of sparkling water at serving. I'll let you know how that comes out!
